In the presence of H.E Dr.Rania Al-Mashat Minister of International Cooperation, Major-general Mohamed Taher Elsherief the governor of Alexandria, and Ms.Elena Panova the United Nations Resident Coordinator and the accompanying visiting delegation team, on Sunday 26th of February 2023, UNIDO Energy projects in Egypt partook a part of the United Nations Week that consists of a series of field visits in multiple governorates including Alexandria last Sunday.
The field visits were launched at Sidi Kerir Petrochemicals Company (SIDPEC) Sunday morning, where UNIDO energy projects in Egypt had the chance to showcase their on-going efforts in cooperation with the Ministry of Trade and Industry to enhance the Egyptian industrial sector in adapting energy efficiency and clean energy transition to build climate change resilience. UNIDO’s team led by Mr.Ahmed Rezk the Deputy Regional Director of UNIDO and Dr.Gihan Bayoumi National Program Officer at UNIDO along with representatives from Sidpec led by Sidpec Chairman and CEO, Eng. Mohamed Ibrahim and Quality General Manager of Quality, Energy and Excellence in Sidpec, Dr. Mohamed Salah and Eng.Ahmed Mekky the president and chairman of the Holding Company for Petrochemicals (ECHEM) , facilitated the visit and allowed H.E Dr.Al-Mashat, Major-general Moahmed Taher and Ms.Elena to engage and speak in confidence with a roster of energy experts and technicians along the factory’s production line who were trained by UNIDO. The visiting delegation team had the chance to learn about the most prominent achievements of both “Solar Heating for Industrial Process Project” and “Industrial Motors Energy Efficiency Project” that address planet and prosperity pillars in the United Nations Partnership Development Framework (UNPDF) 2018-2022. The projects trained over 300 industrial end users, suppliers, & motor system optimization experts, 30 motor upgrade projects facilitated through technical and business advisory services.
Throughout the visit opportunity was granted to identify the salience of partnerships fostering the race to Net-zero with special emphasis on partnership between Egypt and the UN within the previous (UNPDF) 2018-2022 and demonstrating the ambitions of the upcoming UNSDCF. This is since the UN week’s field visits in different governorates will eventually lead-up to the signing ceremony of the 2023-2027 United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF).
